Take a tour of our project in Esher with Josie and Michelle!

This project is just starting out and is in the early phases of construction. The team have finished the annex early as a place for the clients to stay when they visit site. The main house is being extended out 3 meters to create an entrance worthy of a house of this size and location, and the entire floor plan is being reconfigured.

The floor to ceiling cabinets are painted in @littlegreenepaintcompany “Ho Ho Green”, with feature curved and reeded glass wall units surrounding the hob. To contrast, the island is finished in a natural oak to add more texture and warmth to the scheme.

Step inside the walk-in wine room at our Surrey estate project - featuring solid bronze glazed screens to divide the area from the main kitchen. We designed custom hammered panels as a backdrop to the wine display, which are lit with warm LED lighting to enhance the textured effect.

Despite much of the space being in the eaves of a previously extended area of this arts and crafts home, the client wanted the master suite here to take advantage of the beautiful views. Sloped ceilings add so much complexity to joinery design in particular to ensure storage is efficient. This week in #designtips we’re focusing on…choosing your sofa! 🛋️

Who knew a simple sofa choice could be so stressful? Sofas are a big investment & can really make or break your scheme. A sofa made bespoke to your requirements can often cost the same, or even less, than a pre-made option - so why not make it perfect? Here are the key points to consider:

1. Use: Is your sofa for a comfy family space, or a more formal setting? This will define how you select your requirements below.

2. Width: Sofas come in fairly standard sizes which often won’t work for your room or what is comfortable for you! If your sofa needs to be specific dimensions for the space, ensure you set this out on a floorplan. If you choose based on seating requirements, we like to go for 200-220cm in length for either a cosy 2 person sofa, or a more formal 3 person sofa.

3. Depth: This is very much a personal preference. For an informal sofa, you will want something deeper with a softer back than a formal option. The depth also depends on your height to determine what is most comfortable for its regular usage. Standard sofas are between 80-100cm in depth.

4. The back: You can choose to have loose scatter cushions as the back to your sofa, large back cushions or even a fixed back sofa. Swipe through our images to see how these differing styles can look! Both can look formal or informal depending on shape & styling.

5. The filling: We always advise clients to go to any showroom for high end furniture & test out the seats to determine what ratio of foam to feather they want. This will determine how firm your seat is which will again impact comfort & how formal the sofa appears.

6. The fabric: For playrooms or sofas in family homes, we often specify from @perennialsfabrics who make stain & bleach proof fabrics which will survive both crayon artwork & the occasional red wine spill! Otherwise, consider how your fabric will look when in use. For example, velvet or fabrics with a sheen will have that mixed tone look once touched.

5. The filling: We always advise clients to go to any showroom for high end furniture & test out the seats to determine what ratio of foam to feather they want. This will determine how firm your seat is which will again impact comfort & how formal the sofa appears.

6. The fabric: For playrooms or sofas in family homes, we often specify from @perennialsfabrics who make stain & bleach proof fabrics which will survive both crayon artwork & the occasional red wine spill! Otherwise, consider how your fabric will look when in use. For example, velvet or fabrics with a sheen will have that mixed tone look once touched.

#THURSDAYTHEME: Kitchen colours! 🎨

It’s never an easy decision picking your kitchen colour. We’ve done yellow, blue, pink, green, timber, metal and even cabinets made out of marble…will green and blue always be popular favourites? Do you want to make a statement? Or is it timeless luxury you’re after?

Our top tip is to not pick an exact colour to begin with. Every colour and shade imaginable is there to choose, but your accessories and finishes are limited in choices and combinations that work together. If you set your mind on your kitchen colour too early, you might find it difficult to complete a scheme that is cohesive and incorporates the functionality that you want from your kitchen.

Firstly, think about:
→ Lighting
→ Handles
→ Sanitaryware
→ Flooring
→ Worktops, splashbacks and tiling

Once you have those sorted, think about your options for cabinetry colours and then you can decide on the exact shades. We would always suggest breaking up your runs with some glass (perhaps ribbed?) cabinets, and timber accents. You can also think about mixing cabinet finishes – either a different colour for the island, or for the base and wall units, or perhaps mix liquid metal with lacquer and timber units?

Do you ever look at Instagram and wonder why your bed never looks like the professional photographs? You’ll be pleased to know…no-one’s bed looks like that in real life. No bedlinen is ever wrinkle free, no matter how many steamers you burn through! However, there are some design tips you can use to get much closer to a magazine-worthy bedroom set up…

1. Invest in your bedding. Simple white, cotton, high thread-count sheets are all you need. There’s no need for colours or trims on the sheets and pillows themselves. Go for simple quality here and you can’t go wrong. Our top tip is to choose buttons for the duvet over ribbon ties as these tend to rip off in the wash.

2. Frame with a headboard. A headboard that frames both the bedside table and the bed is one of our favourite ways to make a statement and create a picture perfect look. This is the place to experiment with textures or fun fabrics and a combination of panels in different materials.

3. Cushions cushions cushions! If you are the type to never make your bed in the morning this may not be for you, but obviously we love cushions and the opportunity they bring to incorporate lots of different fabrics & trim, to really build up the layers on the bedding. On top of 2 sets of 2 pillows, we would recommend 2 larger and 2 smaller for a King, or 3 and a bolster, and for a Super King 3 larger and 2 medium.

4. Throws. For a more casual look drape a blanket or throw over a corner of the bed. Or choose a bedspread to cover the bottom third of the bed. Or both! You know we love those layers!

5. Making the bed. Research suggests that people who make their bed in the morning are more productive. Strip everything back, fluff your pillows and set them one on top of the other. Fold your duvet down so that the cushions are all able to fit on the sheet behind the duvet. 🌟 PROJECT FEATURE 🌟

Spring is coming, we’re thinking about the seaside and reminiscing about our coastal holiday home design! We initially worked with these clients on the full interior architecture and design of their gorgeous family home in Wimbledon. Having got to know them well, we were thrilled to be able to turn our hands to making their holiday home just as perfect!

This cottage is a listed building in a beautiful waterside location on the South coast. The architecture was already very traditional with modern overtones, as the previous owners had added on a modern glass-roofed extension. Our clients also favoured more modern design so we created a very cosy contemporary scheme, with lots of neutrals and blues which tie in nicely with the overall coastal theme. In the older part of the house there were lots of gorgeous exposed beams which we contrasted with natural materials such as sisal, rattan and linens. The existing floorboards were originally a dark orange, but we sanded them back to reveal beautiful pale oak which fit perfectly into the scheme. We also specified lots of cute nautical accessories 🦀

It being a holiday home, it was extra fun to design the client’s three children’s rooms in a vacation style, completely different to the bedrooms we designed back in London. Holiday homes give licence to add quirky features such as a football table and a games room, which might not fly back in the family home! One slight downside of a beautiful home on the water meant we definitely had our work cut out when it came to installation. We had to time deliveries and plan our days around the rising and sinking tides, or at points we would be trapped until the tide receded! (Though of all the places to be trapped, we were hardly complaining…) 🌊

#TUESDAYTUTORIAL: BATHROOM VANITIES 🛁

You’ll be very lucky if you can find an off-the-shelf vanity that fits perfectly in your bathroom, provides the storage you need and fits your overall scheme. Often a bespoke vanity costs little more than a readily available one and the benefits are well worth it! If you are designing your own, have a think about the following:

1. Dimensions! This is ultimately where it can go very wrong. Obviously, you’ll want to specify the width and depth to fit your floorplan. But what about the height of your drawers? Perhaps you want to fit an electric toothbrush stand upright with a socket at the back of a drawer? You’ll need to account for a cut out at the back of the drawer for plumbing too. You’ll also want to think about the overall height – forget standard dimensions and pick a height that’s comfortable for you!

2. Elevations: The alignment of your sink, tap, mixers, mirror and perhaps wall lights or pendants will give your design symmetry and ensure that everything is functional but pleasing to the eye. If you have a sit-on bowl sink, you’ll want to ensure that your tap and mixers sit high enough to clear the top of the bowl. Draw up the exact dimensions for your builder to ensure the positions of the mirror, lights and tap are as you’d expect - otherwise you may be in for some surprising combinations!

3. Lighting: As always, lighting is a key feature to all of our design tutorials. If this is a bathroom you use frequently, it is best to consider an LED mirror with a demister pad for the best visibility. However, for less functional secondary bathrooms or powder rooms, you might want to think about wall lights or pendants, to bring more interest to the vanity area and provide softer lighting.

A few other points to consider…floating or standing vanity? Soft close drawers? One or two basins? Over or undermounted sink? Tap with separate mixers? Upstand, tiled or mosaic splashback? Built in drawer dividers or open drawers?
